What is an architectural technologist?

Architectural Design Services in London, Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire & Sussex

Philip is a Chartered Architectural Technologist, trained in designing everything from an entire building through to remodelling or reconfiguring an existing structure. The discipline integrates architecture, science, technology and engineering and ensures that a building or structure is fit for purpose and designed to meet its users’ needs, whilst incorporating rigorous health and safety requirements and other crucial elements such as the social well-being of its users. As a chartered member of the CIAT, the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, Philip has a particular interest in traditional building styles, energy efficiency and sustainability.

What is the difference between an architectural technologist and an architect?

We are often asked what the difference between an architectural technologist and an architect is. Both disciplines involve building design and technical design, but they are governed by different bodies; architectural technologists are governed by the CIAT (Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists) and architects by RIBA (Royal Institute for British Architects).

Although architects are generally considered to place greater weight on aesthetics and architectural technologists on the science and technology of how buildings are constructed, this is not always the case. Philip started his training in design and interiors at Chelsea College of Art, so his work is primarily design-led – allowing his clients the best of both worlds.

A good rule of thumb is to meet with a potential architectural technologist or architect, ask for examples of their previous work and see if you share a similar style and approach.

Our End-to-End Service

At the heart of our practice is the commitment to be of service to our clients to ensure we achieve the best possible results. We do everything we can to take the stress out of planning, managing and delivering beautiful projects, from the initial meeting all the way through to hanging pictures and plumping the cushions.

Expert spatial design ensures we create spaces that meet the needs, and reflect the personalities, of the those that inhabit them. Our architectural and design expertise means we take a single creative vision from start to finish, to ensure how you want to use the space is flawlessly integrated with the building’s architectural style. This integrated approach means our designs not only look beautiful, but function optimally, avoiding expensive mistakes and awkward compromises; there’s always a plug socket in the right place for your phone charger, the plumbing and joists are in the right places for the roll top bath you’ve dreamed of and the Christmas Tree fits where you want it. The final result is both right for place and right for you.

We are well versed in measured surveys, including cutting edge LiDAR surveying (a laser precision measuring system which allows quick and accurate surveying and the subsequent creation of 3D models of a project) 2D and 3D CAD modelling, additions, remodelling, extensions, conversions, planning applications and listed building consent, engagement of building contractors and drawing up relevant legal contracts and overseeing the work.

“This was our first experience of using an interior designer on a commercial project and we count ourselves very lucky that we found Philip! His layouts made really effective use of the available spaces and his surveys, architectural and technical drawings, as well as his knowledge, were really impressive.”
